A-Z: Kittens! Who Doesn't Love Kittens?

My cat, Metaphor (now aka Stinky), along with her sister Simile, was one of the cutest kittens, ever.

About 3-4 months old here.

Then she got to be a cat. Then a really, really big cat.  Even after her sister died and her food was restricted, she was badly overweight, and stayed overweight.

Yes, she does look like a medicine ball with a head.

Despite a fortune spent on cat toys to entice her to be more active, multiple vet visits, and a carefully rationed portion of diet cat chow every day, Metaphor remains... let's call her extremely fluffy.  She's still a sweetheart, and I still love her. (Though I'm slightly less fond in the moments when she's *hurking* up the food I just fed her.  Or yowling at me at 5:00 a.m. because she's starving to death.)  But she's simply not a cute l'il kitten anymore.

Random Kitten Generator is still one of the places I like to visit on the web, for pure mindless fun.

And let me put in a pitch: If you love animals, always, ALWAYS have your pets neutered and spayed. It's a myth that they need to have one litter first, according to veterinarians.  In fact, animals spayed before their first heat are healthier throughout their lives.

If you want you children to witness "the miracle of birth," consider contacting an animal shelter or rescue facility.  Many will allow a family to temporarily foster a pregnant animal until her kittens or puppies are old enough to be adopted.

The three (or four, or six) kittens your cat has (or puppies your dog has) that you find homes for, mean that three, four, or six animals in a shelter don't find a home and are euthanized.  There are periodic low and no-cost spaying and neutering clinics - if you truly look, you can find one.

Enjoy kittens, as I do, but please be a responsible kitten lover.  Look at the pretty pictures, if you're not prepared to take on all the costs and duties of caring for a pet, including spaying, neutering, vaccinations and play time.
